Studies have shown that a sedentary lifestyle can lead to a wide range of health problems, including:

Obesity: People who sit for long periods of time are more likely to be overweight or obese, even if they are not eating more calories than they need. According to the World Health Organization, in 2016, 39% of adults aged 18 years and over were overweight and 13% were obese globally.

Cardiovascular disease: Prolonged sitting has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. One study found that people who sit for more than eight hours a day have a 147% higher risk of cardiovascular events than those who sit for four hours or less.

Diabetes: Lack of physical activity can also increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. One study found that people who sit for more than eight hours a day have a 90% higher risk of developing diabetes than those who sit for four hours or less.

Cancer: There is evidence that prolonged sitting may increase the risk of certain types of cancer, including breast, colon, and lung cancer.

In addition to these health problems, a sedentary lifestyle can also have negative effects on mental health, including an increased risk of depression and anxiety.

To combat the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle, experts recommend that adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week, in addition to strength training exercises at least two days a week. Even small changes, such as standing up and moving around for a few minutes every hour, can have a positive impact on health.
